Water and Money

15th May 2023

Taking place between 15 and 19 May, Water Saving Week is an annual week created by Waterwise to raise awareness of the issues around water use.

When discussing water and money, we often think we only pay for the water used. However, water is a silent user of energy. Yes, we need to carry on using water to keep our homes and bodies clean, but a few minor changes will help us get back control.

According to a study carried out for us at South East Water by the National Energy Action, almost half of us shower every day, on average taking a whopping seven minutes.

For a family of four, just by each person cutting down the showering time to four minutes, this could save £280 a year on the household energy bill.

This would also save up to 52,000 litres of water a year, saving you money off your water bill and good news for the environment too.

If you still have concerns about paying your water bill, we have a range of special tariffs that can help with your water bill's cost.

Social Tariff

The Social Tariff caps your water bill and includes a discount on your wastewater charges. To qualify, you must have a household income of less than £18,005 (excluding any disability and housing payments you receive).

WaterSure

The WaterSure Tariff caps your charges to our average bill. You could be eligible for WaterSure if you are a metered customer in receipt of certain qualifying benefits and have either three or more children under the age of 19 or have someone in your home with a medical condition, which means you use a lot of water.

These special tariffs or making simple swaps to your water and energy usage means that water doesn't have to cost the earth.
