Water Saving Week: Water and Food Security

16th May 2022

Taking place between 23 and 27 May, Water Saving Week is an annual week created by Waterwise to raise awareness of the issues around water use.

When we talk about why we’re saving water, we usually think of saving money and taking care of the environment. Another really important reason to be mindful of water efficiency is that water is so imperative to food production.

Farmers use water for their crops, and for their animals to drink and bathe. It’s used in so many production processes from keeping things clean and preparing food, to cooking and serving too. Without water, access to food would be almost impossible.

This is why, in the event of a disaster, we have a very thorough and well considered resilience plan. We recognise resilience as the ability to avoid, cope with and recover from disruption. We understand we need to be flexible to maintain services as well as protect the natural environment.

In our resilience plan, we discuss our vision to embed an understanding of our systems and their interdependencies into everything we do.

To deliver our vision, we need to develop an approach for mapping and understanding our systems. We’ll also need to develop an integrated resilience framework which contains all the fundamental building blocks for a robust organisation.

This means, with your help of being mindful of how much water you use, we’ll be able to continue providing you with great quality drinking water, as well as ensuring there is enough for large scale production services too.
